The Advantages of Apprenticeship
- The apprentices are employed workers. They have a contract which includes regular wage increases and diversified training.
- They are paid good wages while they learn.
- They will learn to produce with modern tools and machines.
- They will gain experience using the most modern practices.
- They will gain a thorough knowledge of industrial materials.
- They will be taught to use or install thousands of dollars worth of materials during their apprenticeship. This is one of many reasons why an apprentice cannot be fully trained in a classroom.
- They will work under the direction of a journeyman who will teach them the trade, in the shop and at the job site.
- As their knowledge and ability increase, their rate of pay will increase.
Wages and Benefits
- 1st Period ( 50% journeyman ) $11.35 per hour
- 2nd Period ( 55% journeyman ) $12.49 per hour
- 3rd Period ( 65% journeyman ) $14.76 per hour
- 4th Period ( 70% journeyman ) $15.89 per hour
- 5th Period ( 75% journeyman ) $17.03 per hour
- 6th Period ( 85% journeyman ) $19.30 per hour
- Wage rates are subject to change through negotiations between employers and the Union. Wage advancement after second period must include each school year completion.
- Same Health & Welfare Ins. plan as journeymen.
- Good Pension plans after completion of the first two periods of apprenticeship.
- Five year program.
Basic Qualifications for Apprenticeship
- Must be at least 17 years of age to apply, 18 years of age to enter the program.
- Must be a High School graduate or have a GED.
- Must have completed one full year of High School algebra with a passing grade or one post-High School algebra course with a passing grade.
- Must have a qualifying score on an aptitude test as prescribed by the JATC Committee.
- Must provide official transcript(s) from High School or post-High School showing courses and grades.
- Acceptance after interview by JATC. ( This committee is composed of three employers and three journeymen, they administer the apprenticeship system. )
- Willingness to work, study and attend classes.
- Applicants selected for the apprenticeship program will be subject to drug testing and/or physical examination.
- Applicant must possess valid drivers license.
